Learning from our own inbox

Often the best opportunity to think about how we approach our role and the impact of what we do is to reground ourselves by learning from others. I had that moment today when I opened up my inbox to see this email from Target which reminded me how important that first impression is for our email campaigns. My observations and learning are below.

  1. Personalization - No one likes to be thought of as a number so don't address me by my order number. Address me by my name or the item(s) I was shopping.
  2. Run Tests - Before anything goes live, test it, pre-read it and have it QA'd by someone other than yourself to catch things. "You can still help guests as they shop on Target.com" isn't intended for this message. And a second order number is then noted that doesn't match the first one referenced.
  3. Timing - This email was delivered 17 days after I abandoned my cart. The window to close a Target sale is likely within 72 hours (I'm sure they have data on it). In my case, I chose to purchase in-store 3 days later. Timing is everything to stay top-of-mind during the sales journey.
