Custom Domain vs Sub-Domain for email marketing

So we are looking to move our digital marketing from one supplier (eShot) to Mailchimp.

We are currently paying for a custom domain. so we "company.co.uk" are using the domain "company-marketing.co.uk" ive been told that using this separate domain is better for spam filters but im looking for some advice on this.

What are my options is it better to use a sub.domain like updates.company.co.uk or Sales.company.co.uk

Do we even need another domain?

I can not understand the need for this and how some companies get around this spam filter.
