mailto: limitations?

Hi, I'm trying to include a mailto link to a specific email address within the body copy of my HTML email.

For some reason, this particular email address does not seem to register. I have

<a href="mailto:\[target\_email\]">

and when I click the link, it opens a blank page and doesn't do anything.

When I replace [target_email] with my [work_email], I get a pop-up in my mailing app, suggesting the problem isn't in the code. This makes me wonder what are the limitations of the mailto function in HTML email? What could be the reason this particular email address doesn't trigger the mailto function?
