Best practices for emailing a small (~12 people) list?

My company has a database of about a thousand customers. We would like to target a dozen or so specific individuals who don't have any related criteria I can use to create a query, the bulk email software we use doesn't allow me to tag them in some way to create the list, nor does it allow manual list creation. (Yes, I know, the software is not great.)

The purpose of the list is to announce and offer a new product to a small group of specific customers we believe would be interested so we can sort of test the product before launching it to a wider audience.

I am somewhat new to the field and am wondering if there are best practices for this sort of situation. The list is small enough that we can just send individual emails in Outlook, but is a basic typed email sent from my address going to be effective?
