Groups can't be required on some MailChimp signup forms?

I'd like to use a hosted or embedded MailChimp signup form where the visitor is required to make a group selection when signing-up. On this page, MailChimp seems to say that is not possible:

"Group fields can be required on pop-up signup forms, and the Signup Form content block on landing pages, but not on hosted or embedded signup forms. Advanced, paid users can use the Advanced Forms option to custom-code a required group field."

Is this really the case? Or am I misunderstanding something? ...I just don't understand why MailChimp would not allow such a field to be required on some of its forms...!
