Investigating reasons of ending up in spam

Our emails ended up in spam at a very critical moment. On investigation of almost 1 yr, we found out this

  1. Lots of invalid emails signed up to mailing list
  2. An autoresponder used to respond to inbox messages (with message: we will get in touch with you, meanwhile checkout these relevant links), this resulted in sending emails to noreply marketing emails we recieved on those mailboxes
  3. We used short links in emails using url shortening device bitly to remember the long urls

What are other possible reasons that your emails end up in spam?

How to systemically approach mailing list management and making sure that emails get delivered in the inbox?" A checklist would be quite useful
