When do I switch from plain emails to pretty ones?

I have a tiny startup with ~300 people on email list. The customer base seem to be pretty excited about the product, and I want to have close and personal relationships with them So far I send out emails without any template or fancy markup, just like ones people write to each other. At which point should I switch to more traditional email campaigns? Why don’t companies use the plain emails? It seems to grab attention better because feels much more personal
