AVIF image format for email?

I have never heard of the new AVIF file format before this morning, but reading up on it since then has got me excited.

According to this article, "AVIF offers significant file size reduction for images compared with JPEG or WebP; ~50% savings compared to JPEG, and ~20% savings compared to WebP."

This article has some examples of it in use. Looking at the file sizes and quality is what impressed me the most. A few clients I work with have a lot of image-heavy emails. We've been getting the file size as lightweight as possible, but image quality inevitably suffers. This seems like a potential fix to that issue.

Is anyone here familiar with it, or how it might come to be implemented into emails?
