Getting Subscribers to Open Emails More and Click More Links

As an email marketer, you want to have engaged subscribers. People can just subscribe any time in your email list and all of a sudden, they are gone. This is a problem for you because you paid money or time and effort to get them in your email list and yet they do not even open your emails or click your links. If they don’t click your links, you have no chance of monetizing your list. If you are not able to monetize your list, you will not be in business for very long.

As much as you want to help people with all the free information you are giving out to your list members, at the end of the day what you want is to make a profit so that you can sustain a certain lifestyle and your business. This will not happen if they don’t even open your emails. So let’s figure out how to get your list members to open your emails and engage with you.

The first thing to think about is where your traffic is coming from. Many people buy traffic like from Fiverr or other places and they think this is good because they are cheap. But many times this traffic is bad because they are bots most of the time or if they are actual humans then they are not qualified traffic and the topic is not relevant to them so they quickly leave. Whoever does engage with your message is likely to just check out what you are offering, and because what they see is not even relevant to what they are looking for, they don’t continue engaging with you.

Targeting and qualifying your traffic properly is a must. Think of your niche and get traffic from sources that are relevant to your niche. For example if you are in weight loss, then you need to target people in weight loss forums or in Facebook groups about weight loss. Because if you go into general forums that are meant for everyone, they will check out your free content or lead magnet quickly and leave. There will be a lot of people doing this and this may even annoy them because it’s not relevant to what they want. It may even result in a ban because they think you’re spam.

Use double opt in. This filters low quality sign ups. Many list owners may argue against double opt ins but they are an important part of your email marketing strategy if the list you want is engaging. This is also not to mention that you are paying for every email list member to be in your list. GetResponse gets expensive after 5,000 subscribers especially if you go the pro version. So if those freebie seekers just take up real estate in your lists, there was no point in them being there anyway. Most of the time it’s a good idea play hard to get anyway because it makes you seem more valuable and the people that enter your circle are filtered and qualified.

You should also be cleaning your list regularly so that the unresponsive subscribers are removed from your list. This makes it even better for your sender reputation because email service providers are seeing that a greater percentage of your members are engaging with you and see you less of a spammer. This will make it so your emails go less into the spam or promotions folder and more into the main email inbox. Most people don’t think about their sender reputation because it’s like a shadow ban of sorts. You don’t see if your emails get sent to your receiver’s promotion folder unless you were the receiver or you send the email to yourself. So culling your list is a good way to maintain list hygiene thus improving your sender score. This is also another reason to use double opt in so that your list mostly consists of engaged subs instead of tire kickers, or even worse – bots.

These are just some ideas to initiate a conversation about this topic. What do you think?
