Back when I was working in house for a financial publisher, we decided to send a deep dive survey to our list.

We’d never done this before despite being in business for over a decade.

All of our copy was based on who we thought our prospects were and what they wanted.

But we were struggling to figure out what our next promotion should be - so we decided to leave it to our list to decide.

The result?

Even the most basic assumptions we had around their demographics were skewed.

See, we sold trading products so we assumed we were selling to middle aged people…

When in reality - most of our list was over 55.

And were trying to trade full time to retire.

We weren’t too far off, but what we found helped us hit the right emotional hot buttons in our copy.

PLUS: We got to ask them first hand exactly what their challenges are and what they want from us.

That made our job SO much easier.

And it was honestly shocking how much detail some of the respondents gave us.

If you own a list, I HIGHLY encourage you to send out a survey to your audience too.

It doesn’t have to be fancy.

A simple 5 question survey hosted on SurveyMonkey will do just fine.

Here’s a few ideas on questions that will help you understand your audience better…

(I’ve used the fitness niche as an example, feel free to replace that with your niche)

- What is your SINGLE biggest fitness goal right now?

- What are your top 1-3 biggest challenges when it comes to achieving your ideal weight?

- What diets, exercise routines or other strategies have you tried in the past to achieve your goal?

- Which of these areas do you want to improve the most? [List]

- Please list any training programs or fitness products you’ve purchased in the past.

- Please share your favorite YouTube channels, blogs, websites or books that continue to help you reach your goals.

The form will hardly take you 10 minutes to set up.

Then, it’s just a matter of sending it out to your list and waiting for responses.

I guarantee this will help you understand and talk to your list more effectively.
